白い影 |shiroi-kage ・「white shadows」

美人は言わねど隠れなし | It is no secret: everyone knows what a bijin is.
                                                                               — Japanese proverb

At the core of every culture lies a particular view of the body which establishes which perceptual experiences the culture decides to value. In attempting to attain those experiences, certain principles for moving and handling the body become deep-rooted. These, in turn, pave the way for the decisive skills to master in the various branches of art, establishing the distinctive rich cultural essences from which the culture can flourish.
Quel est ton pouvoir?
Faut-il donc avoir,
Dis, sorcière,
De longs yeux bridés
Et des traits fardés
Pour lui plaire?
“What is your power?
Tell me, witch,
does it take
long, slanting eyes
and painted features
to please him?”
Louis Gallet – 1871 – “La princesse jaune” Op. 30 no. 1
